I would try running something like:
$ lilypond -V --ps --pdf test.ly
It will show the command it's using to convert the .ps file to PDF,
eg:
gs -dNOSAFER -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=595.28 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=841.89
-dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -r1200 -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=./test.pdf -c.setpdfwrite -ftest.ps
And, you'll be left with the original .ps file.
So then you could try that gs command, perhaps even adding -dDEBUG
to see what's going on.
