Would setting volume to zero be ok for your use case ? If so, try
something like the following:

    \new Staff \with {
      midiInstrument = "muted trumpet"
      midiMinimumVolume = #0.0
      midiMaximumVolume = #0.0
    } {
      \new Voice = "vocal" { \melody }
    }
