I think it's a sort of macro thingy, trying to be easy to be used. Look at 'Known issues and warnings' at the bottom of https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.20/Documentation/extending/markup-construction-in-scheme So make-circle-markup would be equivalent. Cheers, Robin
