trill spanner over whole note

Hi again.

I am trying to get a trill spanner over a quarter note tied to a whole note
and through that measure.

    r2 r4 c' ~  \startTrillSpan|
    << { c'1 \< } \\ {s4 s s s \stopTrillSpan } >>
    d'1\f  |
  }

I tried to use the spacer rests for this but it doesn't seem to do what I
want and the tie and crescendo aren't working here either.

Any help or explanations would be helpful.
