How have you attached the lyrics? I think you are not using contexts
properly, but I need to see what you are doing to help you with it.

I always use frescobaldi to set up the score, and it sets the lyrics in
seprate parts, like
sopranoVerse = \lyricmode { }
The solution Guy gave above works OK for me in his particular case, so
for now I'm happy.
