Figures -- I did a few searches looking for automatic bar numbering per
this question without finding it, but as soon as I look for something else
I found "Printing bar numbers inside boxes or circles" at
https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.23/Documentation/notation/bars#bar-numbers, and
that got things working well enough.
