While this work in placing the words correctly, it is, in my case, not quite flawless. If I render the attached snippet, there is no "2"-bracket above the second alternative.

This was a bug introduced in the 2.23 series, https://gitlab.com/lilypond/lilypond/-/issues/6181. It has been fixed. Try upgrading to the newly released version 2.24.0.
