MIDI settings can be changed globally (or in a book or bookpart), but the generation of an actual MIDI file is only triggered when a \midi block is encountered inside of a \score . Something like that. It doesn't help the user as much when you tell them what doesn't create a MIDI file: after all, they will rather be looking at how to create one. -- David Kastrup
