Are you sure that this is the Frescobaldi that was installed by MacPorts? It rather sounds like the (buggy) .app distributed in the Frescobaldi releases. I think the MacPorts-installed Frescobaldi should be launched by executing the `frescobaldi` command in a terminal — which was apparently successful for you.
