It is important to understand that the syntax for beaming, like slurs, requires the symbols to be post-fixed.
As such it is best to keep the symbols snug to the event they apply: c16[ r c8]To a seasoned LilyPonder, this clearly indicates beaming beginning with the 16th note and ending with the 8th.
