If I can chime in here ... When I wrote 'articulate.ly' lilypond's
handling of Midi grace notes was rudimentary at best.  It's changed
since, and may now be fighting with what articulate does.

I was mostly interested (at the time) in Baroque music practice, and
was following CPE Bach, 'The True Art of playing Keyboard Instruments'.
In chapter 2, 'Embellishments' section 2 'The Appoggiatura', point 11
he says, 'The usual rule of duration for appogiaturas is that they
take from the following tone of duple length one half of its value,
and two-thirds from one of triple length'.

He also says in his next point, 'appoggiaturas which depart from this
rule of duration should be written as large notes'

And has a heap of counter examples -- for instance, the performer
ought to be sensitive to what else is going on to avoid infelicitous
clashes with other parts, or successive open fifths, or ... and goes
on for a whole chapter.
