IIRC, that snippet originally had a different purpose than it does
now; I think it began as a way to move each lyric syllable so that
its first vowel is centered on the notehead. For a contrived
example, it would move the syllable "Shhhhhhhow!" so that the o is
centered under the note head, and "nexxxxxxxxxxxt" so that the e
is centered.
Am I simply wrong, and this snippet never acted that way?
If I'm not wrong, is there a way in version 2.24 or 2.25 to get
the center-on-vowel behavior that I thought was the purpose of
this snippet? (I don't want it as a one-time tweak, but to
realign all the lyrics in the score.)
