Thank you, Lukas, that was the missing piece for me. This overly long 
name made me think that there should be a better way to do it and that 
this name is only kept for backwards compatibility. I found several 
ways, but my question is: what is the recommended way to do this?

I could not find evidence for that but I assume, setting 
tempoWholesPerMinute or using \tempo has the same effect. So probably, I 
will use \tempo in future.
