I see that argument. However if you're serious about gregorian chants, use 
gregorio.

When you don't care about the midi output you could modify the spacing by 
changing the length of the notes. Multiply them with rational fractions like 
*1/2 or *3/4 or *5/7 or whatever seems appropriate to shorten the distance. 
Similar to lengthen it. It requires a bit of trail and error but you'll get a 
spacing closer to what you would have in a proper gregorian chant.
