Windows so far. Seems like I should give it another try ...

@Henning, I'm not sure what you mean with "if you don’t want to lose your data" 
... how would I lose data if I used Lilypond on Windows instead of any other 
system?

Thanks all for your input. I try what happens if I install the new Frescobaldi 
version. So far, what you tell me about it sounds promising, in particular that 
Lilypond installation is from within Frescobaldi ... let's see if I can get the 
lilyjazz fonts to work again, too.
