Sorry for noise... I see now that the problem is that braces are mandatory for \fill-line (where in other places in LP, an expression without braces can serve as a single argument to a function -- `\transpose bf c' \clarinet` is OK but `\fill-line \bold "text"` in a center-column is not). The error message was misleading here. hjh
