The only way I know to reliably have Arabic numerals in variables is to use
quotes, like:

"testing123" = \relative { c'4 d e f }
\new Staff \"testing123"

A major downside to this is that if you are using Frescobaldi as your
editor, it doesn't recognize these kinds of variables (that is to say, it
won't auto-complete them.)

There may be other ways that I am not aware of.
