I can’t really answer that question except as far as my experience goes: Only recently did I see custom engravers that didn’t seem to be in the triple digits of lines; the amount of internals that one needs to understand is much larger; it’s not documented anywhere close as well; and in effect there’s a lot fewer examples flying around ready to learn from, modify and imitate without enormous overhead.
