But it is documented as a "don't do it", so no substantive problem, just slightly unintuitive.
This behaviour is expected. The empty chord has zero duration, occurring at the same time as the following note. Post-events attached to the empty chord are added to the note.  "a8[ <>] b" is identical to  "a8[ b]".
