Hello everyone,

I’ve been searching for quite a while and have somewhat lost track of all
the information, so I’m hoping someone on this mailing list can help me.

I’m a music teacher, and for my students I use LilyPond and Frescobaldi to
create musical examples. These are not full sheet music scores, but small
snippets — for example, a single staff with a treble clef and a scale to
teach pitch.

I’ve been using LilyPond for many years, and until recently I always
included
\include "lilypond-book-preamble.ly"
at the top of my files. When exporting to PNG via Frescobaldi, this
resulted in small images without extra white space around them, which was
exactly what I needed.

Recently, the IT department at my school updated LilyPond and Frescobaldi
to the latest versions. Since then, I can no longer export small images:
every PNG I generate is a full A4 page, with the music fragment placed in
the top-left corner.

While searching online, I’ve come across various developer discussions and
now understand that the functionality I previously relied on (the
book-preamble) has been removed from LilyPond. However, it’s still unclear
to me how I can achieve the same result with the current versions.

The documentation mentions several command-line options when invoking
LilyPond
(https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.24/Documentation/usage/other-programs),
presumably via the command prompt. Unfortunately, I use LilyPond
exclusively through Frescobaldi on my work laptop, and I don’t have the
permissions (or sufficient knowledge) to work with the command line.

I’m hoping someone can point me to a solution that allows me to continue
creating these small PNG snippets for our own teaching materials.

Many thanks in advance!
Lodewijk
