I routinely use the hufnagel style custodes in stemless modern notation chant scores. See e.g. http://www.inadiutorium.cz/materialy/marianske_antifony.pdf (and almost any other sheet at http://www.inadiutorium.cz/materialy/noty ). They are visible enough (unlike the Vaticana custodes in modern notation staff), not all too extravagant (unlike the mensural ones) and can't be easily confused with notes intended to be sung.
