Ok, I think that explains the effect in my example: the rest gets aligned to the nearest staff line, even though it should receive a ledger line to meet the sense of my \override command. Still odd that the same doesn’t happen for negative voiced-position values. With all due respect, Keith’s solution to #3902 seems like a half-baked compromise, and the description for the voiced-position property is misleading, but I’ll get back to that replying to David.
I don't know exactly what triggered your question, but I'd suspect that the answer might be: Just use staff-position.
I tried that first of course, and it didn’t work. I found the voiced-position property and jumped to the conclusion that it must be a “recent” addition causing staff-position to be disregarded on rests and MMRs. Well, I’ll test again why the staff-position override actually failed me.
