Risto,

Thanks for the help, but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! I'm not a geek, and although I understand UTF-8, I have never worked in hex, or even Latex. (I did a bit of document editing in TeX about 20 years ago with my son's very close coaching, but that's it.)

What I need to know here (and it's not a big deal -- I have a workaround) is *if* I am in UTF-8 -- how to tell in jEdit, and *how* to put it into that mode if I am not.

Any help available?

It seems that jEdit doesn't always "understand" that the file is UTF-8
encoded. I sometimes get some scary looking stuff when I try to use
accented characters. Usually this can be solved by adding the UTF-8
bit order marker (BOM) i.e. EF BB BF to the beginning of file using a
Hex editor. Not very elegant but it helps sometimes.
