You make this look right now, e.g., by
        << c1 \\ {s2\< s4. \! s8} >>

... which is both musically incorrect AND unnecessarily awkward to code. ;-)

This is really something that Lilypond SHOULD handle more gracefully. Even my suggested fix -- which would be superior to the current workaround(s) -- is flawed, since it would only LOOK like the dynamic started/ended in a different spot (i.e., it would not likely fix the MIDI performance problem).
