Lilypond is not supposed to start, at least not in the way you are expecting. Lilypond works like this:
1. You type a text file containing music instructions. 2. When you finish typing, you give a command for Lilypond to interpret your file. 3. Lilypond follows the instructions in your text file and spits out a page of music.
