You could be right. :-) I once struggled trying to use normal serif
font with volta brackets and Mats told me this trick.

The name "latin1" is only there for historical reasons and is the font encoding that's used by default if the font-encoding property is unset. In other words, it's what's used for normal
text. The setting of font-family in Risto's solution isn't necessary.
What confuses me for the moment is why you cannot get the same result by saying
\revert Score.Fingering #'font-encoding
