I've found that when using evince to view pdf output, moving the cursor over score elements displays the line in the .ly file that the elements spring from. This is a convenient way to find the code that corresponds to the output (using Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)).

these styles can be a great help when you are splitting notes into voices or
if you add dynamics and other articulations to the score - and you don't
remember to which voice you had added it...

IMO dots, accidentals, dynamics and maybe even markups should be colored,
too!
