How does it *force* the mixture of content and presentation?
==> \tag is, by definition, used to control output in different editions (presentations) of the same music (content) — i.e., it mixes content and presentation. <== AFAICT, \tag is only more effective than the alternative workarounds when it is applied inside the content.
Hence, IMO, using \tag instead of more effective alternatives happens if and only if you are mixing content and presentation.
