Even more important - just try stuff from the manual and see for yourself how it works. Unlike a lot of software, Lilypond's learning manual is EXTREMELY important to read, and luckily very good too. Using Lilypond without reading the manual is like eating soup with a fork. You could do it, but it would be really frustrating and take far too long.
