Yes! If you look carefully at the example in
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.12/Documentation/user/lilypond/Attached-to-notes#Dynamics
you will notice that these commands just change the way that subsequent
\> and \< directives work, i.e. you still have to use \> to start your
diminuendo, for example. This should be better explained in the text and
I will make a modification to appear in future versions of the manual.
