The funny thing is that " " (1 space inside) doesn't work, and " " (2
spaces) does. Any ideas why?

Thanks, Jan. I'd tried a few other things with non-printing characters, but
not that. My LilyPond generator now converts the code <stop> to " " and so
I can stop the long extenders.
