\override LyricText #'extra-offset = #'(0.0 . 2.0)
before that line of text, and
\revert LyricText #'extra-offset
after it, i got the correct spacing.
i don't know what makes extra-offset kludgy, but it sure was my friend on
this one... (after all, kludgy comes from the german word klug...)
