I am still a bit of a novice myself, but I think you want to do something like:

        \new Staff {
                \clef "bass_8"
                \symbols
        }
        \new TabStaff {
                \clef moderntab
                \set TabStaff.stringTunings = #bass-tuning
                \symbols
        }
>>
