well - I think originally the idea was to display chords over two staves (and nothing more)! the only thing I found with a quick search in LilyPond's lists is this contribution: http://lilypond.1069038.n5.nabble.com/How-to-cross-staff-beam-different-length-notes-in-a-chord-td137328.html#a137349 maybe this is adaptable!?
