Hi Urs, if you're not married to LaTeX, I'd suggest ConTeXt - I use its filter module to call LilyPond during TeX "compiler" runs (and it’s intelligent enough to recompile only changed LilyPond sections). This workflow works good for my songbooklets, but I guess you'd need some tweaking if you need to embed a lot of little snippets.
