if I just click on the download link (eg

then instead of a dialog asking for the location to place the download, the script file opens as a web page. I have to right-click and choose "Save link
as..." to download it.

I get the "open or save" dialogue here with both links and a fairly
new ubuntu-firefox system, so it may be that it depends on your own
personal browser configuration and settings. The MIME type of both
links is reported here as "a SH file", so both links should behave the
same for you.

In Chrome here, both links go to the "Save File" dialogue.

Checking the headers with Fiddler give both the links above as application\x-sh, so I think something must have changed on Nick's system.
