Between tight staves, to keep the dynamics close enough to their home staff
so they don't look like they might belong to the upper voice on the next staff
down.

 \override DynamicLineSpanner #'staff-padding = #1.5

People have been talking about making LilyPond align the height of dynamics
in a row, as if they were jointed by a hairpin crescendo. Probably best if
this is done upon request, with some indication like b\mp\_ to make an alignment
to the next dynamic, but not draw any hairpin or take up space.
This is in the bug-tracker and might not be so hard.
