It's common advice to read up a bit on a mailing list before posting the first time. It avoids asking the same questions for the third time one day (particularly dangerous if you discussed this previously on some other forum since others might already have taken it to the list), and it helps figuring out how people are communicating. Of course, if you first listen in to conversation in a bar and then approach a stranger with "Hi, asshole. How's the old wife?" then you still might get a worse result than the person you witnessed delivering that exact line previously.
