Sorry for the late answer … Thanks for the suggestion, Kieren, anyway I decided to go with my two-voice approach because I needed the markup to appear at the beginning of the bar and so needed no further adjustments.
I’m wondering, though, why \halign #5 doesn’t work in my above example.
