There is a way to make roman numerals here.
http://lsr.dsi.unimi.it/LSR/Item?id=710
Click on the image, save the wall of text you see as roman.ly, and add the
line \include roman.ly after the version line.

As for the rest, I would have to see your code to see why it was acting
strange.
