O.k. that was a terrible question, after further working it is the padding (is this the correct terminology?) that I want to get rid of. For some reason the addition of a hairpin increases the space between staves, which is probably admirable and useful behavior most of the time. That is in this instance not desired. For once we want a happy collision.
