This may not be the best way of thinking about it.
Rather, think that you need to put the [ immediately after the first note in
the beam group, and the ] immediately after the last note in the beam group,
e.g.
a[ b]
a[ b c]
a[ b] c[ d e]
etc.
This is the same for slurs, e.g.
a( b)
a( b c)
a( b) c( d e)
etc.
