Hello,

I have some up-todate info about Linux distributions,
so here it is:

1. Distribution is a compilation of a Linux Kernel, startup
scripts, config. files and critical support sw. they
also include some type of installation routines/scripts
so that you can get a working Linux system.
One important distinguishing characteristics of Linux
distr. is which packaging method they use. RH Package
Manger, (RPM's), Debian packages and tarballs - files
collected together with a tar utility and typically compressed
with "compress", "gzip" or "bzip2",
are the most common package formats.
Many Linux distr. are derivated from RH or from Debian(www.debian.org)

2. As to the specific question:
2.1 Mandrake is a French based offshot of RH Linux. Originally
developed as a RH which integrated K Desktop(KDE) as
a GUI environment. Mandrake has since developed more
of its own personality, including a good GUI installer
and some unusual choices in standard server software(ex
for mail purposes).English web page at www.linux-mandrake.com/en
It is available for x86, IA-64, SPARC, Alpha, Power PC
CPU's.

2.2 Red Hat one of the oldest and more influential distributions,
they developed the RPM format used by other distr.
as well, even some that are not based on RH. The distr.
includes GUI Installation, config. tools that are unusually
complete, available for the above CPU's families as
well, but ceased SPARC development with version 6.2.

Good Luck,

Veronica
