The current automake (1.4*) depends on gcc (-M) for this (this means that
the primary developer [the one who runs automake] MUST use gcc).
It is one of goals for the next version (1.6*) to put this inteligence
into automake itself. I don't know what strategy they are taking, as automake
evolves in other directions (e.g: Java support) related to dependency generation.
