Hello all,
I have just finished installing my RH 7.3 on my new computer (thanks
Muli for the discs). This installation included access to an NTFS
filesystem, a (Mustek 600) UPS with elegant shutdown on power failure,
two ext3 filesystems (one big and one small with symbolic links), Samba
client and server, and a basic ipchains firewall (would you believe
that? Moi setting up a firewall?).
My general impression of the distribution, is that Linux is getting more
and more like Windows, for better and for worse. It looks nicer, it
APPEARS to be simple, and it's messier when something goes wrong. The
installation utility made some decisions instead of me, some of which
kept me busy for an hour or four to figure out.
Warm thanks to Guy for his strace lecture. The strace utility was
heavily used to reverse-engineer a few poorly-documented, but
nevertheless important utilities (pop quiz: Where does the Samba server
read its smb.conf from? And where is THAT documented?)
Anyhow, I thought about making a "lecture", or rather an open
discussion, during which I tell you what I've been through, and other
members can share their experiences with other distros and/or hardware.
Very simple slides, just to move from topic to topic, and what I did and
where I got stuck. Or what I liked. Where you got stuck. What you did
right. What you did wrong, what I did wrong.
So what do you say about meeting on Monday, Nov 25th on this issue? It
has to be quite soon, since I forget things exponentially.
If you're interested, and don't want to swamp the mailing list, please
affirm to me privately with a short note. The reactions to this idea
were somewhat ambigous last time I suggested it, and I really want to
know if there will be any participation.
Greetings,
Eli
