Depends on what you want to do. The Linux ELKS project seems to be making
improvements, and I hear they even have source availabe for download, but I
don't think it can do much yet. I never did try minix but I've ran OpenDOS
with their WebSpyder browser and it worked for what I needed; Caldera has
all this for download off their site at <http://www.caldera.com/>. I also
used to bring an old NEC Ultralite 8086-based laptop with me wherever I went
for writing and term emulation purposes. It only ran DOS 3.3 (built into a
chip), but with a text editor and a term program it was actually very useful
on the road, and the machine was cheap enough so that if something happened
to it it dodn't matter. I'm actually looking for one of these right now if I
can find one for cheap -- it's one of the lightest laptops I've ever seen
(some of those old 8086 laptops were pretty bulky).
