I dunno, they may be right -- it does seem to be true to a great
extent so far, although I would revise the dire prediction ever so
slightly: the kind of free software that is most likely to succeed is
the software that programmers want to use.
A subtle difference, but an important one, and grounds for some
optimism.
Obviously, such software includes those things directly related to
programming work, but other things (TeX, the GIMP, even Apache) might
be along for the ride as long as there are programmers interested in
using them.
