There is BMRT which is free for non commercial use, but it does not come
with source. Its probably the best implementation of renderman available,
the output quality matches PRrenderman in anything ive seen, and you dont
have to make any maps for it. but its also REALLY slow, especially if you
give it trimmed nurbs. because you dont have to make any maps, shadows,
reflections etc are correct over bumped or displaced textures, and
allowing for these shapes means you get beutifull perfect curves that
would mean many a polygon otherwise. It great for still, too slow for
animation unless you have some serious hardware. (no, its not available
for linux/alpha. wish it was, then id have a good excuse to go build one
:-)
unfortunately the modellers that do it justice are rhino (windows only)
and alias (irix only, and just a bit on the pricey side)
its mostly a matter of personal preference, (i like trimmed nurbs and
alias and rhino and shaders) but since i got BMRT ive stopped using
povray.
