What format is your stuff in -- is it on CD, or otherwise digital yet?

If it's in some other file format, you can use sox to turn it into a
.wav.

If it's on CD you can use cdparanoia or cdda2wav to put them in .wav
files.

If it's on analog tape you can plug the output of your tape deck to
the LINE IN on your sound card and use arec, brec, snd, rec or similar
tool to record it as a .wav and edit it in a sound editor like snd.

(Is there a better way to do any of this??)
