Hi Michael,

Our tree guy (from Lueders) was here just now spraying our hemlocks with
horticultural oil, so I asked him whether we really still need to be
spraying. He told me that because we had a cold winter three years ago, the
numbers of adelgid were knocked back. But after two warm winters they are
returning, and he has seen a lot this year. He isn't aware of any research
showing that they are waning for good, unfortunately. According to him,
regular horicultural oil treatments usually avoid the need for the more
expensive and less environmentally friendly systemic treatments. He said it
is also good for elongate scale, which also damages hemlocks and is not
affected by cold winters. That's all I know - hope it helps.
